“Exploring learning makes life richer

We support Japanese language learners as they embrace new challenges, enriching their lives through the Joy of Learning.

Our Story & Mission

Coto Japanese Institute is a Japanese language school, accredited by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Founded in 2000 as a small volunteer initiative by Yukiko Watanabe, Coto began in a two-bedroom apartment in Tokyo, teaching Japanese to local residents. Over the years, it has grown into Coto Japanese Academy, with five locations and an online platform, while maintaining a strong focus on personal growth and meaningful learning beyond language alone.

The launch of Coto Japanese Institute continues this long-standing philosophy. Our mission is to support international learners step-by-step and nurture “Global Ambassadors” who experience Japan deeply and share its appeal with the world, guided by our belief: “Enjoy Learning, Enjoy Life.”

About Coto Japanese Institute

Coto Japanese Institute is a MEXT-accredited Japanese language school in Tokyo offering one and two-year programs for international learners. Accreditation by Japan’s Ministry of Education means the institute meets rigorous standards in curriculum, faculty, and school management, and is authorized to sponsor student visa applications through the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) process.

Programs focus on practical, career-oriented Japanese designed to support life and work in Japan. Students study in modern facilities equipped with smart boards, a dedicated library, a community lounge, and self-study resources. Beyond the classroom, monthly cultural events give students regular chances to practice Japanese and explore Tokyo and the surrounding area.

Meet Your Faculty Members

K. Ito – Principal

I am honored to serve as principal of the Coto Japanese Institute. The greatest appeal of learning a language is the connections it creates. I’ll never forget when a student told a joke in Japanese and classmates from all over the world laughed together. It showed me that language is more than study—it’s about expanding your world and perspective. At Coto, our mission is to help you grow through Japanese. We are dedicated to supporting your communication skills, career goals, and dreams. Our whole team is committed to your success.

C. Oda – Head Teacher

For years, I have had the privilege of guiding students toward their dream careers. The most rewarding moments for me as a teacher are the simple “thank you, sensei” messages. “Sensei, I got that job!” “Sensei, I had a great conversation with a customer today. Thank you!” These words from my students are my driving force. They give me the energy to work hard and push forward. Here at the Coto Japanese Institute, I am dedicated to giving you the full support you need to achieve your goals. Let’s work hard together!

R. Iwatsuki – Teacher

My passion for teaching began in 2001 during a working holiday in Canada, inspired by an English teacher who created a warm, positive classroom where students from all over the world could connect and laugh together. That’s when I knew I wanted to become a Japanese teacher. Since 2008, I’ve had the privilege of helping many students learn and grow. At Coto, I believe the fastest way to learn is by enjoying the process, so I focus on creating a fun, lively classroom where you can feel comfortable and confident. I look forward to meeting you and sharing engaging, memorable lessons together.
