Coto Japanese Institute Certified as Accredited Japanese Language Education Institution by MEXT

2026 Apr 20

Coto Japanese Institute has been formally certified as an Accredited Japanese Language Education Institution by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) on its second round of review.

The certification recognizes institutions that meet rigorous standards in educational content, faculty structure, and school management, and is administered by MEXT as Japan’s primary quality assurance mechanism for Japanese language education. A key outcome of accreditation is the authorization to sponsor and submit applications for Certificates of Eligibility (COE), the official document issued by Japan’s Immigration Services Agency as part of the student visa application process.

Coto Japanese Institute can now support the full student visa pathway, giving international students a clear, supported, and legally recognized route to study full-time in Japan and build the life and career they’re working toward.

About Coto Japanese Institute

Coto Japanese Institute is a full-time, accredited Japanese-language school based in Tokyo and affiliated with Coto Academy, one of Japan’s most established private Japanese-language schools. The long-term Japanese language course at Coto Japanese Institute is a structured, one-year pathway designed for students who want to acquire the comprehensive Japanese language skills and cultural understanding necessary to work and build a life in Japan.

Classes are intentionally kept small (between 10 and 16 students) so that every learner gets the attention and support they need. Students are guided by qualified, experienced teachers who are genuinely invested in their progress, with full wrap-around support covering life guidance, housing, insurance, and career development from day one.

What is an Accredited Japanese Language Education Institution?

In April 2024, Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) introduced a new national accreditation system for Japanese language schools under the Act on the Accreditation of Japanese Language Education Institutions. The system replaces the previous Ministry of Justice Notified Schools framework and establishes MEXT, rather than the Ministry of Justice, as the authority responsible for certifying the quality of Japanese language education in Japan.

What This Means for Applicants

For anyone who has dreamed of living and studying in Japan, this is significant news. Previously, students could attend Coto’s programs on a short-term or cultural visa. With Ministry of Education approval, international students can now enroll in full-time courses through Coto Japanese Institute, giving them the legal status to live in Japan for the duration of their studies.
